Reality +

A book has just been published by the philosopher David Chalmers, entitled ‘Reality +’. He argues that in the future, we won’t be able to tell the difference between the real world and the virtual world. In this world (as in The Matrix), we will be so immersed that our senses won’t perceive the difference between the real and visual worlds. This is, in turn, connected to the aims of the ‘metaverse’ (previously Facebook).

In this virtual world, the climate never changes, and there are no people suffering, because none of it is real. Ethics may (arguably), be made irrelevant in such a world, because nothing truly exists, although it appears to.

The book itself is worth reading, as well as this critical review of it, in which the author challenges these arguments. It’s well worth reading.
