My reading tricks

1. Before reading a book or a piece of text, I always Google the author’s name to get some background information. It gives me a general idea of the author’s area of expertise. Following the searching, If I am unfamiliar with the author’s specialism, I will do some background reading to help me understand the book and the text.

2. Reading other people’s book reviews is also a shortcut to getting a general idea of a book and a piece of text. It sometimes helps me decide whether or not to buy a book. However, over-relying on the book reviews makes me miss some interesting books because book reviews are always subjective and based on personal preference that is rooted in one’s living and study experience.

3. Trying to search and find the book’s edition translated into your first language. It is a dumb but efficient way for me to read an inaccessible book.
